考研高频单词讲解-6

很久没更新该系列了，今天写一篇。

46. private

私有的。在这篇博文提到过，这里展开说一说。

private来自于拉丁语privus，其中词根由per构成，per和pro作为前缀的意思大致一样，都是 ‘forward’。因为 forward（向前），所以 be in the front（在前面），后来逐渐变为 be separate（被分隔开），最后变为私有的。

通过private，可以推导出deprive（de ‘away from’ + prive，从私有的拿走）=> 剥夺。

Privateer: private的主动形式 => 私掠。

47. universe

uni ‘one’ + verse ‘turn’。uni这里已经说过，表示 “一”。一个转动的东西 => 宇宙，意思来源于古人对于星象的观察。

由universe引申出来universal，意为全部的，具有普遍性的。

Multiverse：多重宇宙。Parallel universe：平行宇宙。verse是转的词根，volv是转动，有细微的不同，要注意区分。

48. approach

靠近，ad ‘表加强’ + prop ‘near’。

靠近某个机构（如银行）=> 接洽事务。

We’ve just approached the bank for/about a loan.

同样可以表处理，因为靠近某个问题 => 处理问题。

I’m not sure how to approach the problem.

通过这一层意思，可以推理出另一个意思：（处理问题的）方式，方法，态度。

Since our research so far has not produced any answers to this problem, we need to adopt a different approach to it.

49. article

由 artus 演变而来，意为连接。Article就是连接起来的东西。这个单词不难，这里补充一个较难记忆的单词：articulate。

ate作为动词化后缀，所以articulate字面意思就是连接在一起。这一层意思进一步演化可以表示为表达（或发音）非常地流畅（单词连接在一起）。

They were unable to articulate their emotions.

同样也是一个形容词，表示流畅的。

an articulate account of their experiences

50. central

Centre意为中心。

Fug词根意为逃 ‘flee’，refugee（往回逃离 => 难民），所以centrifuge（从中间逃）是离心机。centrifugal force是离心力。

Pet词根意为 “rush”，centripetal是向中心跑，所以centripetal force：向心力。

Eccentric（ex + centre)，远离中心的，离奇的。

51. characteristic

Character（字母，性格，角色）来自于德语’kharaktēr’，词根是khar，意为雕刻，划刻。

character字面义为engraved mark，character有符号的意思，显然来源于此。如果用来形容人心灵上雕刻的记号，那么就是他的性格。每一个角色都有不同的性格，所以character还可以表示角色。

istic是形容词后缀，能够表示性格的 => 典型的。某个物品典型的东西就是他的特征，此处是形容词的名词化，这里看不懂可以参考这篇博文。

52. combine

组合，com + bi ‘two’。把两个东西放在一起起来就是组合。

bi是双，比如bicycle，两个轮子 => 自行车。二进制数：binary number。二的另一个词根duo可以参考这篇博文。

53. complete

com + ple。共同折叠 => 完成。

两个词根都很熟悉了，ple在这里详细进行了解读，此处不在赘述。

54. consequence

con + seq ‘follow’ + ence。seq表跟随，一起跟随而来的事情 => 结果。

second（sec = seq，c=q，发音相同）：

秒（n），一个接一个的。
第二（adj），接着第一个。
支持（v），跟着被支持的人。（熟词生义，要注意）

55. consume

con + su ‘sub’+ em ‘take’，共同从下面拿走 => 消费。em是一个冷门词根，但是使用的还是很多，希望同学们可以记住。

em作为词根，意为’take’，

example，向外拿 => 例子。
exemption，拿出去的东西 => 赦免。
subsume，从下面拿 => 包括。
preemptive，先拿 => 先发制人。

单词讲解第三节，let’go~ 21. federal 联邦的，最出名的就是FBI（Federal Bureau of Investigation，联邦调查局），顾名思义，美国是联邦制国家。但是美国在颁布《美利坚合众国宪法》（Constitution of the United States）前仍然属于邦联制（confederal）国家。 Federal和confederal的区别在于confederal通常是由多个国家组成，federal则是一个国家，比如欧盟可以称之为邦联。 Bureau如果记不住可以和politburo（politic + bureau，政治局）一起记忆。该政治机构由布尔什维克（bolshevik，俄语中意为多数派majority）首创。多提一句孟什维克（menshevik）是少数派，minority，前缀men和min实际上是同源的，可以相互加深记忆。同理bol就是多large的词根（不用记忆） 22. average 平均，做形容词、名词、动词均可。补充几个数学名词 Mean：平均数（adj.还有下流的意思），出现频率较高 Mode：众数。低频 Median：中位数。低频 23. avoid void，空，来自于vuide(古法语），学过c、c++编程的同学肯定知道void的意思啦。 evuider（e + vuider，向外变空）是法语的清空和避免，然后字母经过变形（元音变化）到了英语就成了avoid。西班牙语：evitar，避免。这几个单词虽然长得不一样，但是仔细分析实际上都是同源词根，某些元音和辅音稍作变化就成了另一个语言的单词。有能力的同学多记忆点别的语言的的单词还能加深印象。 24. casino 赌场，最著名的莫过于Las vegas了，来自于词根 casa’house’。 cottage就是由casa变化而来（s变成t，加age名词后缀）。 25. dam 大坝，鹿特丹（Rotterdam）和阿姆斯特丹（Amsterdam）中的dam取自该意。这两所城市都是属于Netherlands（荷兰，尼德兰），nether就是低，low的词根（同源词beneath，be nether。注意与neither区分开），所以荷兰又被称之为低地国家，海拔很低，所以需要大量建造da...

考研高频单词讲解-5

本文为该系列第五期，我之前也对常用的变化规律简单介绍了一下，所以大家应该对单词形变有了基本的概念。如果没有我再贴几个链接，方便大家加深理解。第一个回答： https://www.zhihu.com/question/27044578/answer/35030903 引用几段话：元音（区别于元音字母）间的变化可以忽略，不要造成记忆上的负担。比如fact, fect, fic都是fac(做)这个词根的同源异形根。也就是说元音在词根含义中意义不大。辅音向[d][t]过渡，而[t],[d]则向[s]过渡。词根首字母会同化词缀尾字母。我们下面要说的 success 里就是sub尾字母b受到了词根cess首字母的影响而变成suc。这样的例子在英文单词中数不胜数，第三点之前的单词出现过，但是我一笔带过了，不知道是否影响阅读。再补里面一张比较有价值的一张图片： https://i.imgur.com/nbFnLQU.jpg 第二个回答： https://www.zhihu.com/question/21817832/answer/767747947 墙裂建议看完以上两个回答，基础不好的可以加深印象，已经明白了的可以再多补充点知识。下面进入正文部分，本次只有五个单词，但是信息量相当大，把引用都看了还是比较累的，希望可以有耐心。看不太懂同学们没关系，多次学习，能看多少是多少^_^ 41.immigrant im’en’+ migrate’move’，看一下immigrate的英英释义： To move into a foreign country to stay permanently. 意思比较简单，就是migrate的词根好像比较难记，好在是单词本身应该已经能够记忆了，所以用单词记忆词根在这里比较合适。要注意区分的是emigrant的意思也是移民，只不过在这里是指向外移民（e表ex，向外）。举个栗子， an emigrant ship是一艘去往其他国家的移民船，而 an immigrant ship就是向本国来驶的船。这里用汉语无法区分，或者说很不方便，所以要格外地注意其中细微的区别。动词emigrate和immigrate同理。贴一个韦氏字典的解释，还提到了refugee这个单词，有兴趣的同学可以自行查看。再补充一个小知识，migrate本身就有迁移的意思，...

本期写一点关于古希腊罗马神话（Classical mythology）相关的词源故事，希望可以帮助大家更好地记住与之有关的单词。 1. Echo Echo 我们都知道是回声的意思。在希腊神话中，有个山岳仙女（Mountain nymph）也叫 Echo，她经常用美丽的声音，迷人的故事故意缠住好妒的赫拉（Hera，宙斯之妻），转移她的注意力，以便于宙斯（Zeus）可以趁机与其他仙女幽会。不料东窗事发，愤怒的赫拉让 Echo 失去了声音，作为惩罚。此后 Echo 只能重复别人所发出的声音，于是 Echo 一词进入英语之后就有了“回声”的意思。后来 Echo 遇到了 Narcissus（那耳喀索斯，又译作纳西瑟斯），他们俩一见钟情，可是因为 Echo 无法表达自己的爱意，她郁郁而终，最后只剩下声音回荡在山谷之中。 2. 考研高频单词讲解-1

本期写一篇考研高频单词的讲解，主要是从词根词缀出发写一点个人背单词的技巧和心得，或者是一些小的辨析之类的。词频的来源是这里。授人鱼不如授人以渔，先推荐两个个我常用的词根查询网站（全英+科学上网）： Etymonline Wiktionary 前期直接看可能难度较大，可以参考 http://www.dicts.cn/ 这个网站，逐渐熟悉后再慢慢适应英文版。话不多说，直接开始吧~~ 1. industrial industry的形容词，注意industry有勤奋的意思，而industrial没有【勤奋的】的意思，只有【工业的】的意思。Industry由 indu + stry组成，indu 由indo结尾变化而来（元音变化很常见，可以理解为a = e = i = o =u），意为 in或者within ， stry = stru = structure。综合起来就是在里面建造=》工业。 2. involve in（≈indo）+volve（旋转，拟声词，模仿旋转的声音） = 卷入，涉及。Volvo沃尔沃也是源自同一个词根，元音变化又用上啦，e 变成了 o。volve这个词根的同源词也很多，需要单开一节讲解。 3. moral 这个单词从词源比较难记，因为无法得出有效的记忆规律。所以多个同源单词一起记忆比较方便。 Demoralize 这个单词翻译考过，de = off 去掉，morale（士气），懂点词根很容易就能知道他的意思啦。比如LOL中被Ace（团灭）了就非常地demoralizing哈哈。如果每人拿到一个人头就叫做team ace，虽然通常都是adc（attack damage carry）, ap(ability power carry)拿人头。说到ace这个单词也很有趣，ace是扑克（poker）中最大的。有一种说法是，1789年法国大革命之后，平民获得了更多权力，于是最底层ace就变成最大的啦。如果各位有兴趣还可以学习扑克中的历史+英语， Jack , Queen , King 对应了不同的人物，其中黑桃q（queen of spades，spade是铲子）原型是雅典娜（Athena），还有很多有意思的人物，这里就不展开啦，有兴趣可以自己查阅以上超链接。 Morale 加e变名词，有道德的状态（concerning mor...
